EQUIP’s WATSAN (water and sanitation) department works hard at going out and finding the needs of the community and then filling them through the support of our donors. Hand pumps are the safest form of drinking water in Liberia. They are dug 20 to 40 feet into the ground so that the water is naturally filtered by the soil. Many communities do not have hand pumps or even protected wells, which is the second best source of water. Their only source of water could be a nearby stream or even a "shadow well", which is a very shall hole dug in a swampy area.

We have set up and rehabilitated over three hundred hand pumps throughout Liberia. We encourage people to see the need for latrines themselves and work together as a community to build one for themselves. We have provided concrete slabs for over 300 communities and we teach them how to build their own latrines. EQUIP also ensures safe drinking water by building protected wells and chlorinating ones that already exist.

EQUIP educates the community on the importance of safe drinking water, proper hand washing, latrine-use and sanitation issues, proper storage of drinking water in sealed containers, and protecting their water sources.
