In 2008, EQUIP was award a three year grant under the Malaria Communities Program, part of USAID’s President’s Malaria Initiative. EQUIP’s Goal under this project is to increase skills, knowledge and awareness of malaria prevention and control in the target populations in Nimba and Sinoe Counties.

PMI Project Objectives:
1) Increase skills, knowledge and awareness of malaria prevention and control of community members
2) Increase proportion of pregnant women and children under five sleeping under an insecticide treated nets (ITN)
3) Increase the proportion of pregnant women receiving intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy (IPT) during their pregnancy
4) Increase the proportion of children < 5 with suspected malaria receiving treatment with an artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) within 24 hours of onset of symptoms
5) Increase utilization of effective malaria treatment measures among community members
Under this program EQUIP trains CHAs in prevention and early referral for malaria treatment, and trains clinical personnel on treatment with the new malaria treatment- ACT, and IPT for pregnant women. In addition, EQUIP works with the National Malaria Control Program, Ministry of Health and County Health Teams to implement the National Malaria Control Strategy and 5-Year Plan, including the distribution of ITNs in house to house campaigns throughout the counties.
